NASA Hunch Academy

Overview

The NASA HUNCH Academy is designed to engage Elementary and Middle school age students with age-appropriate, hands-on, fun, Investigation Stations that involve the many challenges facing NASA engineers and scientists, who are helping astronauts live and work on the Moon, Mars, and Beyond. The Investigation Stations for these projects are written as Lesson Plans that promote a profound understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to be scientists and engineers. The hidden agenda for the NASA HUNCH Academy is to instill in each student the desire and confidence to pursue courses and careers in STEM areas. Below are our current list of projects for students to enjoy.

For students: Become a NASA explorer
Instead of just reading about science, you'll become an actual NASA investigator. The HUNCH Academy puts you in the shoes of a NASA engineer or scientist to solve real space problems.
Imagine this:

Growing dinner for astronauts: Do you like gardening? In the Plants in Space project, you'll figure out how to grow food in a lunar colony, where there's no soil or fresh air.

Building a lunar colony: Create a model of a moon habitat. The Lunar Brick Mold project challenges you to design and build structures that can protect astronauts from the harsh lunar environment.

Designing space equipment: In the Lunar Scooter Wheel project, you'll design a wheel that can handle the dusty and crater-filled surface of the Moon.

Creating a new game: Test your creativity and understanding of physics with the Microgravity Dice Game. You'll design a game that astronauts can play while floating in zero gravity.

This isn't just a science project—it's a mission. The academy's "hidden agenda" is to show you that you have what it takes to explore space for real.

For teachers: Launch a project-based learning adventure

The NASA HUNCH Academy isn't just another set of lessons. It provides a complete, hands-on, project-based curriculum that sparks student curiosity and empowers them to think like real scientists and engineers.

Quotes

The scientific method is a most effective vehicle for providing young people with the skills to observe an issue, research the possibilities, test and analyze data, and consider several conclusions in a collaborative, safe, and equitable environment. These tools are applicable to universally global challenges. More significantly, it is critical to model and surround students with the atmosphere for a love for lifelong learning. The educational technology and methods might change dramatically, but the pursuit for accuracy, validity, and wholesome growth will always remain contemporary and current. - Kathy Reynolds NASA HUNCH mentor
